The easiest way to desribe writing a commentary is to pick out all the literary techniques you have used in your work and explain why you have used them, what their desired effect is. Also you need to mention about you aim ie to entertain and how you managed to identify with your target audience.
This handout was prepared specifically for the first year course of the Oxford B.A. in English. Students on other courses may nonetheless find some useful advice about close reading of Old English texts. In the exam, you will have a choice either of writing a commentary on a passage of verse, or of translating a short unseen piece of prose.
Commentary essays are an opportunity to explain the links which different elements of a work have upon one another, and what these elements denote and suggest about particular strands of meaning.
The commentary will allow the student to consider and evaluate the style model, the writing process and the effectiveness of the final piece of writing. The folder submitted should contain: a piece of original writing; an annotated style model; a reflective commentary; references (paper and web-based).
What you’re really trying to do in your reflective commentary is prove to your teacher that you are hitting all these key knowledge and key skills points. As you write, ensure you are discussing how the author uses point of view, context, form, elements of construction and stylistic features in their text.
